The concert of existence places me in resonance with our biosphere, meaning that at this moment there is no “body,” no separation; I am part of the swirl of bio-morphic unfolding. I am not bound by culture or language. The deepening of sensation allows me to be without category. I transfer the moisture of my cells, join the wet of the grass, the pour of the ocean, the stars that watch over the night. The plants that breathe, my skin is wet, we are here. The fundamental umbilical to life without category, is for me, the first stage of sanity.
Continuum is not like anything else. It is not a technique. Continuum is a profound embodiment practice that shifts how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. By slowing to the speed of water, Continuum helps dissolve anything that limits us and prevents us from being fully present.
We use the breath, gentle movements, vocalized sounds, meditative awareness, self-witnessing, visual imagery, and self-touch to restore sensation and awaken awareness of the innate fluid nature of the body. Continuum activates imagination and stimulates the joy and playfulness of creative discovery that get lost in the speed of modern life.
It takes time to slow down and dissolve into a sea of limitless potential. It takes even longer to remember how to savor it. The longer format classes of Continuum are specifically designed to create a container of time and space for exploring what it means to inhabit a human body. By slowing down and remembering how to rest, we begin to recover and restore our truest selves and our connection to all that is.
In a Continuum class, space is created for exploration with the offering of an idea, an image, or a theme. A sequence of simple movements, breaths and sounds will be offered and serves as a catalyst for the exploration of the theme, image, or idea. This exploration is often referred to as a “dive”. Individuals dive in and explore the material at their own pace, in their own timing, and in any position that is most comfortable, manageable, and safe for their body.
Movers can expect to work in multiple relationships to gravity: lying, side-lying, sitting, and standing. The pace of a Continuum class can be quiet, slow, and meditative – with more internal micro-movements – or faster and more dynamic in its range. This more dynamic aspect of the practice, with larger wave-like movements and increased aerobic activity using a variety of exercise props and equipment, is what we call Continuum Playground.
It requires discipline to do this practice on one’s own. Co-creating a group energy field in a class setting is nourishing and amplifies the mover’s responsiveness. Class and workshop sizes can range from three to a few dozen movers. Attending weekly classes or multi-day workshops provide a context for discoveries that can only emerge over time and is strongly encouraged.
Ideally, the practice of Continuum becomes part of our everyday lives by formally “diving” for some period of time each day, and informally integrating the deeper principles of conscious embodiment into our favorite forms of exercise, activities, practices, and daily habits. With time, this conscious awareness incorporates itself into our very perception of the world around us.
